How an impact driver works
An impact driver rotates a 1/4-inch hex accessory normally at light load. When resistance rises, a hammer-and-anvil mechanism delivers short twisting blows. DeWalt describes impact drivers as pulsing force in a twisting direction rather than relying only on continuous rotation.
That mechanism suits tasks such as repeated construction screws, structural wood screws, and some self-drilling metal fasteners when the tool, bit, and fastener manufacturers permit the application. It does not create the forward chipping action normally associated with a hammer drill.
The collet is fast to use but restrictive. It accepts compatible 1/4-inch hex-shank accessories, not ordinary round-shank drill bits. Impact-rated driver bits, holders, adapters, and sockets should be used where required.

How a hammer drill works
A hammer drill turns its chuck like a regular drill while adding rapid forward percussion in hammer mode. DeWalt's technical support describes this as the drill bit moving forward as it rotates, helping it work through masonry resistance.
Many cordless tools in this category are actually hammer drill/drivers. With hammer mode switched off, they can drill wood or metal and use an adjustable clutch for screwdriving. That makes a hammer drill/driver broader in function than an impact driver, although it may be longer or heavier than a comparable plain drill.
For hammer drilling, use a carbide-tipped or masonry bit specifically rated for percussion drilling and follow the manual's speed, pressure, and capacity instructions. The DeWalt DCD805 manual, for example, tells users to apply only enough straight-line pressure to prevent excessive bouncing.

Do not divide the two torque figures and conclude that the impact driver is three times “stronger.” The mechanisms, tool holders, modes, and intended applications differ. Which tool should you use for each project?
Deck, fence, shed, or framing screws
Consider the impact driver. Repeated suitable fasteners are its main use case. Match the driver bit exactly to the screw, use the lowest effective mode, and follow the fastener manufacturer's instructions for pilot holes, spacing, edge distance, corrosion protection, and installation.

Small hardware and furniture
Usually use a drill/driver or hand screwdriver. A hammer drill/driver can perform this work with hammer mode off and a suitable low clutch setting. An impact driver can drive small screws, particularly when it has useful low modes, but continued impacting can damage the fastener or workpiece.

Anchor holes in brick, block, or concrete
Use the masonry tool specified for the anchor system. A suitable hammer drill with the correct percussion-rated bit may be appropriate for many ordinary home anchor holes. The anchor maker—not a generic article—should specify hole diameter, depth, cleaning, embedment, spacing, and installation.
Do not assume every masonry substrate behaves alike. Brick, mortar, hollow block, poured concrete, tile, and stone can require different bits, modes, anchors, and drilling locations. If the material is unknown, brittle, historically significant, or conceals utilities, stop and obtain appropriate guidance.
Larger or repeated concrete holes
Consider an SDS rotary hammer. Rotary hammers use a different bit-retention and impact system intended for more demanding masonry drilling. SDS-Plus and SDS-Max are not interchangeable labels for ordinary three-jaw drill bits.
There is no universal hole-count or diameter at which every hammer drill becomes wrong. Compare the exact hole, concrete, reinforcement risk, bit, anchor requirements, and rated capacity of the tool. Renting can make sense for a one-time project, but current local availability and price must be checked rather than quoted from an old snapshot.
Self-drilling screws in metal
Usually choose an impact driver with an appropriate mode, provided the screw manufacturer allows it. Start square to the fastener and use the specified speed and bit. A self-tapping or assist mode is a model-specific aid; it does not guarantee correct installation.
A hammer drill/driver can also drive screws with hammer mode off. Never use masonry hammer action while driving an ordinary screw.
Automotive lug nuts
Neither is the default tool. A 1/4-inch hex impact driver is not the same as a square-drive impact wrench. A hammer drill is also not designed as a lug-nut tool. Use equipment rated for removal and finish tightening with the method and calibrated torque tool specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Chiseling or demolition
Neither basic tool is intended to become a demolition hammer. Some combination rotary hammers include a hammer-only mode for compatible chisels; ordinary hammer drill/drivers and impact drivers do not gain that function from an adapter.
Can an impact driver drill masonry?
Sometimes, with important limitations. The old version of this article said an impact driver could never drill concrete. That is too absolute because accessory manufacturers sell certain 1/4-inch hex masonry bits approved for use in impact drivers.
However, the driver's impacts act rotationally. It does not reproduce the forward percussion of a hammer drill or the impact system of an SDS rotary hammer. Whether a hex-shank masonry bit is suitable depends on:
- The exact bit's approved tools and materials.
- Required hole diameter and depth.
- The anchor manufacturer's hole requirements.
- The impact driver's capacity and mode.
- Dust-control and safety requirements.
Do not place an ordinary masonry bit into an adapter and assume compatibility. For a defined anchor hole, begin with the anchor instructions and select the tool and bit they require.
Can a hammer drill replace an impact driver?
For occasional screwdriving, often yes. A hammer drill/driver can switch to screwdriving mode, hold standard hex driver bits in its chuck, and use its clutch to help control depth. It can also drill pilot holes without changing tools.
It does not have the impact driver's short hex collet or rotational hammer-and-anvil mechanism. An impact driver may be more convenient when fastening repeats, resistance rises, or keeping a separate drill bit installed saves setup time.

If you already own a capable drill/driver, add only the specialist that solves a current limitation. If you own neither and expect both masonry and fastening, a verified hammer-drill-and-impact combo may reduce duplicate batteries and chargers—but only when the included models fit your work.
Combo kits: verify every model number
Kit names can hide important differences. “Drill and impact combo” may contain a regular drill/driver, not a hammer drill. Similar-looking kits can include different drive modes, batteries, or generations.
Milwaukee's current 3693-22CX is a concrete example of a kit that includes both categories discussed here: a 3602-20 hammer drill/driver, a 3651-20 three-speed impact driver, one XC4.0 battery, one CP2.0 battery, an M18/M12 charger, and a contractor bag.
Those confirmed contents do not establish that the kit is always cheaper or right for everyone. Compare its live price with the exact separate configurations, and decide whether the two different battery capacities suit your expected workload.
Battery compatibility
Two tools sharing a brand name do not automatically share a battery. Confirm the precise platform, voltage family, battery model, charger, and any manufacturer restrictions.
The Milwaukee examples above all belong to M18, but that does not create a general rule for unrelated models or other product families. When comparing weight, also avoid mixing a tool-only figure with a battery-installed figure.
Platform ownership matters because batteries and chargers can represent a substantial part of the full purchase. It should not override tool capacity or safety, but it belongs in the total-cost comparison.
Masonry drilling safety
Drilling brick, concrete, mortar, and similar materials can create respirable crystalline silica dust. NIOSH identifies drilling as an activity that can make silica-containing dust airborne and recommends controlling exposure with safe work practices and engineering controls.
Before drilling:
- Identify the substrate and confirm the correct anchor, bit, tool, and hole location.
- Check for hidden electrical wiring, plumbing, gas, reinforcement, and other hazards.
- Wear appropriate eye and hearing protection.
- Use manufacturer-approved dust collection or another specified control; respiratory protection must be selected and used correctly when required.
- Secure the work area and keep other people away from dust and debris.

- Stop if the bit binds, exposes unexpected material, or approaches reinforcement.
- Lock the trigger or remove the battery before changing accessories.
Avoid dry sweeping or compressed-air cleanup that redistributes fine dust. Follow applicable local rules and professional guidance when the scope exceeds ordinary DIY work.

- List the jobs: separate fasteners from holes in masonry.
- Identify the material: wood, metal, brick, block, concrete, stone, and tile are not one category.
- Read the anchor or fastener instructions: record the required tool, bit, diameter, depth, and installation method.
- Check the holder: 1/4-inch hex collet, adjustable chuck, SDS-Plus, and SDS-Max accept different accessories.
