The voltage badge is useful for identifying a battery system, but it cannot choose a drill for you. The meaningful comparison is between complete tools: their chuck, capacities, speed ranges, clutch, controls, working weight, battery package, and suitability for the holes and fasteners you actually plan to use.
That is why “12V is only a second drill” and “20V is stronger than 18V” are both unreliable buying rules. A compact 12V Max model can be the right only drill for light work. An 18V-class model can offer broader capacity without being the best fit in a cabinet. A higher-voltage drill can be justified for demanding accessories rather than dismissed as marketing.

What “Max” and “nominal” voltage mean
Battery voltage changes with state of charge and operating conditions. Manufacturers may name a platform using a maximum initial measurement or a nominal rating.
DeWalt's current product pages state:
- its 12V Max battery voltage is 12 volts at maximum initial measurement without a workload and 10.8 volts nominally;
- its 20V Max battery voltage is 20 volts at maximum initial measurement without a workload and 18 volts nominally.
That is the factual basis for saying DeWalt 20V Max belongs to the same nominal voltage class commonly marketed as 18V by other manufacturers. It does not establish that a DeWalt drill and an 18V drill from Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, or Ryobi have the same motor, battery output, gearing, capacity, runtime, weight, or performance.
Nor does it establish compatibility. Battery rails, electronics, cell configurations, chargers, and manufacturer approvals are platform-specific. Never connect a pack to another system merely because the nominal voltage appears similar.
Do not generalize every badge
It is tempting to apply the DeWalt explanation to every product labeled “Max.” Do not. A 24V Max, 40V Max, 60V Max, multivoltage, or stacked-cell product may use a different cell arrangement, nominal rating, mode, or architecture. Check the exact manufacturer's documentation.

The DCD701F2's smaller head and 3/8-inch chuck support a compact-use case. The DCD777D1's 1/2-inch chuck accepts a broader range of compatible shanks. Neither fact proves which drill completes an undisclosed job faster.
The output row is intentionally not a numeric head-to-head. DeWalt gives the DCD777D1 a 340 UWO rating, while the DCD701F2 page emphasizes a controlled percentage comparison against a previous tool and battery combination. Inventing a torque conversion or treating that percentage as a cross-model test would create false precision.
The kits also differ in battery count and listed storage. Compare exact SKUs rather than assuming that every 12V kit is smaller or every 20V Max kit includes two batteries and a bag.
When 12V Max is the better fit
A 12V Max drill can be appropriate when the work is defined by access and control rather than large accessories.
Likely use cases include:
- flat-pack furniture and cabinet hardware;
- smaller pilot holes within the manual's limits;
- light fastening where clutch control matters;
- work inside cabinets or other confined spaces;

Bosch lists the PS31N as a 12V Max 3/8-inch drill/driver bare tool. Its published specifications include:

- 265 inch-pounds of torque;
- a 20+1 clutch;
- 1.8-pound tool-only weight;
- manual-listed maximum capacities of 3/4 inch in wood and 3/8 inch in mild metal.
The manual identifies its voltage rating as 10.8V / 12V Max, reinforcing that the maximum/nominal distinction is not unique to DeWalt.
This model can be a valid only drill when those limits cover the work. It becomes unsuitable when a required bit shank does not fit the 3/8-inch chuck, a hole exceeds published capacity, or the user needs a platform category that Bosch 12V Max does not provide in the required configuration.
The PS31N is listed as a bare tool. A first-time buyer must identify compatible batteries and a charger rather than comparing its tool-only listing with a complete kit.
When 18V or 20V Max is the better fit
An 18V-class drill is often the broader option when your project list includes a wider range of hole sizes, longer or repeated fasteners, or future cordless tools with higher energy demands.
Likely reasons include:
- required accessories use shanks that need a 1/2-inch chuck;
- the manufacturer's material and hole capacities match planned work;

Makita XFD131 as an 18V kit reference
Makita currently lists the XFD131 as an 18V LXT brushless 1/2-inch drill/driver kit. The package includes one BL1830B 3.0Ah battery, a DC18SD charger, and a bag. Published drill specifications include:
- 0–500 and 0–1,900 rpm ranges;
- 440 inch-pounds of maximum torque;
- 3.8-pound net weight with the included battery;
- 1/2-inch capacity in steel and 1-1/2-inch capacity in wood.
Those facts make it a useful general-purpose 18V reference. They do not mean it is automatically stronger, faster, or longer-running than every 12V Max or 20V Max tool. Compare capacities and complete configurations for the actual task.
Chuck size can matter more than the voltage badge
A 3/8-inch chuck is not a sign of a toy, and a 1/2-inch chuck does not authorize every large bit.
Choose by:
- required bit-shank diameter and shape;

Torque and UWO do not create a universal voltage ranking
Torque is rotational force. DeWalt's UWO is a different manufacturer output measure. No-load rpm describes speed without a working load. None should be silently converted into another.

Battery energy is commonly approximated from nominal voltage multiplied by amp-hours, producing watt-hours. But available work per charge still depends on:

- material density and thickness;

Do not compare an 18V 4.0Ah pack and a 20V Max 2.0Ah pack by badge alone. First normalize nominal voltage and energy, then evaluate the exact tools and workload. Even that calculation estimates stored energy, not guaranteed screws or holes.
Battery platform breadth: useful, not decisive by itself

Treat each as its own manufacturer-defined system. Do not call a 24V Max product “the same as 20V Max” unless the manufacturer documents the relevant nominal voltage and architecture. Do not describe a multivoltage pack as a set of separate retail packs wired together.
Higher-voltage systems can support different current, cell, thermal, and tool-design choices. They can also add working weight, cost, and another battery interface. The badge still does not replace capacity and task evidence.

Makita lists the GFD01D as a 40V Max XGT brushless 1/2-inch driver-drill kit for demanding drilling and driving. Published specifications include:
- 0–650 and 0–2,600 rpm ranges;
- 1,250 inch-pounds of maximum torque;
- electronic digital clutch settings;
- Active Feedback-sensing Technology, which turns off the motor when accessory rotation is suddenly forced to stop;
- 5.9-pound net weight with the listed battery;
- two 2.5Ah batteries, rapid charger, side handle, and bag in the kit.
This is not “wasted voltage.” It is a distinct high-output configuration with control features and a side handle. It is also substantially different from a compact 12V Max drill and should be purchased for work that requires its capacity and justifies its configured weight and XGT platform.
Electronic shutoff can reduce risk in certain events; it does not prevent every bind-up or replace the side handle, stable support, balanced stance, and manual instructions.
Which voltage class fits your buyer profile?
Apartment, furniture, and light repair
Start with compact 12V Max if every required bit fits, published capacities cover the materials, and the platform has the few compact tools you want. Do not upgrade voltage merely to follow a general rule.
General homeowner with mixed projects
Start by comparing compact 18V or 20V Max drill/driver kits. The broader chuck and platform can provide room for future work, but avoid the largest battery or hammer-drill configuration unless your project list requires it.
Remodeler or frequent large-bit user
Choose from exact capacity, side-handle requirement, bind-up protection, speed range, working weight, and battery plan. An 18V high-output or higher-voltage drill may be appropriate. A rotary hammer or specialty drill may be the correct category instead.
Existing platform owner
